Support your immune system all day every day

Just as we’re all looking forward to Spring, it seems that we have a period of hibernation ahead of us.  As we hunker down, we are all mindful of keeping ourselves and others as upbeat and healthy as we can.

With that in mind, we want to take a look at additional ways to support our immune system in these challenging times.  

We need our technology more than ever right now and we need our homes to be a sanctuary… Somewhere to relax and find our happy space.  

Technology is wonderful but we need to use it wisely. All of our devices emit low level electromagnetic fields and these fields cause stress to the body.   

Electro-magnetic fields are perceived by our immune system as outside invaders and therefore create stress hormones which flood our body and nervous system. This can lead to sleep disorders, depressed immunity, autoimmune disorders, premature ageing and neurological problems.  

Equally, research has shown that EMFs can over-stimulate the immune system, then suppress it. This suppression decreases T-lymphocyte production. T-lymphocytes are vital as they orchestrate the immune system’s response to infected or malignant cells.

The restorative power of sleep

Let’s look at sleep for a moment. We all know a good night’s sleep helps us have a happy productive day and is critical to our health.

The pineal gland, a tiny pea-sized gland shaped like a pine cone, plays a vital part in our sleep story. It is an endocrine gland found in the centre of our brain. One of its jobs is to release melatonin, which it does in response to changes in light. Melatonin helps regulate the body’s internal clock, signalling that it is time to go to sleep.  

However research has shown that the pineal gland can interpret electromagnetic fields as light. When it does this, it means it releases less melatonin and our sleep patterns can become disturbed. 

So back to protecting our immune system… 

We rely on technology and we need it more than ever today, but it is worth being mindful about what effect this might be having, and taking a few simple measures to help you and your loved ones feel more relaxed in these uncertain times.  

Allow your body to relax

  1. Turn all phones on to airplane mode at night. You can still use it as a torch or alarm clock but the reduction in EMF emissions gives your body a break. 
  2. Consider turning your Wi-Fi router off at night too.
  3. Go tech free in your bedroom. Move any cordless landlines out of the bedroom or at least away from the bed – if you can consider using a corded landline.  
  4. Turn your TV off at night.

So what do we do in the day when we are working, learning, chatting, shopping or gaming?
